The “post-PC” era may not have an official starting point, but this may have to do for now. According to NPD DisplaySearch, this is the season in which tablet sales will finally outpace laptop sales in the U.S. market. Senior Analyst Richard Shim writes in the company blog this week that in Q4 tablet shipments will hit 21.5 million units -- not only matching but far surpassing the 14.6 million projected for notebook sales. “Starting in 2013 in North America, tablet shipments are expected to exceed notebook shipments on an annual basis for the first time,” he writes. On a global basis, notebooks will still out-ship tablets until 2015.

AAM-Ditital-Only Pubs And New Requirements

http://www.adweek.com/news/press/pubs-go-digital-only-face-new-requirements-145329
Newsweek might have been the most high-profile magazine to go digital-only, but it's probably not the last. And so the Alliance for Audited Media—as the Audit Bureau of Circulations has renamed itself—has endorsed new guidelines for print publications that go digital-only.  The new guidelines, adopted at the AAM's Nov. 14-16 board meeting, say that when a publication makes that transition, it must give subscribers the option of receiving the digital subscription; converting to another print publication; or receiving a refund for the remainder of the subscription. The Newsweek announcement was a catalyst for the move.

e-books And The Chinese e-market

http://usa.chinadaily.com.cn/culture/2012-11/20/content_15944008.htm
Markus Dohle, chairman and CEO of Random House, says that to fit into the global trend of digital transformation, the Chinese e-market should not get too used to low-priced content but offer e-books with a premium price that readers will buy. While the US market started with digital content and devices, and then the premium-price segment followed naturally, the Chinese market lacks such premium content.  "The Chinese market is the one with growing importance, but its existing business mode and pattern are different from any other market we're operating in," Dohle says during his first-time visit to China in late October. "Print will always be important - no matter the percentage of profit split," he says, "while digital becomes more and more important."

The Story of Mill Towns in a Changing Industry

http://www.startribune.com/business/179601951.html?refer=y&refer=y
The North American paper industry is in rapid decline. Historically a bulwark in the forests of Minnesota, mills have cut thousands of workers and are competing for a shrinking market. A mill in Sartell that closed this year after a Memorial Day explosion was the latest to go dark.
"It's kind of disheartening," said Jim Skurla, an economist at the University of Minnesota Duluth. "Paper's never going to disappear, but it's going to be smaller than it has been."
River towns in the forest from eastern Washington to the coast of Maine have lost more than a hundred paper mills in a wave of consolidation in little more than a decade -- a trend most people in the industry expect to continue. Wisconsin has lost nine paper mills since 2005.

The results show that there was some improvement, with the losses narrowing by $2.8 million on a normalized basis. The revenue declines, the company says, were primarily due to a lower active customer base on books and home entertainment products, and a reduction in promotional investment across Europe and Asia, among other things.

Have Publishers Let Competitors Position Their Media?

Have Publishers Let Competitors Position Their Media?:
Media buyers who buy the products publishers sell now divide the media they manage into three categories.
Earned media, largely social media where organizations "earn" exposure by posting content on services like Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter.
Owned media, media a marketer owns like their company website, newsletter, or blog.
Paid media, third party media, which is most of what publishers sell to marketers.
How did this happen? These category names came into common use around 2008 when social media was being added to media budgets. With the need to contrast social media with traditional media, the social media centric thinking of the time renamed traditional media as it contrasts to social, suddenly we became "paid media." This label casts a negative implication every time it is used.

Finnish/Russian Trade Relations Remain Strained

The Finnish-Russian forest summit held in Helsinki last Wednesday brought no solution to the problems still plaguing the imports of softwood from and exports of paper and paperboard to Russia.
Whether the day-long discussions and negotiations will bring other concrete results, remains to be seen. What became clear was that both countries want investments from each other.
In theory, Russia’s membership in the World Trade Organization makes the country more predictable for investors, as the membership requires Russia to comply with the rules and regulations of international trade.

USPS Cash on Hand Equals 1 Week's Pay

The U.S. Postal Service has cash on hand equal to about a week’s pay for its 525,000 employees, in the best cash-flow environment it expects to have this fiscal year.

“It’s a pretty dire situation,” said Kevin Sterling, a BB&T Capital Markets analyst who follows freight-delivery companies including FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS) that compete with the Postal Service.

NS Export Growth to Lead Country, Port Hawk Fuels Forest Sector

Export Development Canada's (EDC) forecast for Nova Scotia's export growth calls for a rebound of 17 per cent in 2013 after a 14 per cent decline this year.
"Nova Scotia's export growth will lead the country in 2013 with a jump of 17 per cent, driven by a more positive outlook for the natural gas sector, paper mills coming back on line and improved U.S. demand," said Peter Hall, Chief Economist, EDC. "Next year's growth is a relief, a welcome sharp rebound from the 14 per cent decline in 2012."
The forestry sector is also important to Nova Scotia's export picture, responsible for 16 per cent of the province's total exports, and will see growth of 103 per cent growth next year after a 50 per cent decline this year.
"The reopening of the NewPage Port Hawkesbury paper mill will be the base of the forestry export story next year," said Hall. "The shutdown of the Bowater Mersey Mill in Brooklyn, while impactful to the province, is not expected to weigh down export growth as most of its production supplies the domestic market."

The Future Of Food Packaging

The Future Of Food Packaging:
A recent survey by DuPont Packaging got me thinking about the future. The first part of the survey asked packaging professionals from across the world about the most important priorities affecting the industry – cost, sustainability, convenience, shelf impact, and so on. But what really caught my eye was the second part of the survey that asked the same professionals what they thought would be most important ten years from now, in 2022.
The answers were surprisingly different. While cost is king in 2012, sustainability looks to be the biggest concern by 2022. Today integrating merchandising strategies in the packaging process is essential, tomorrow trackability and anti-counterfeiting measures may be the next major challenge.
