Two More Mills Announce Coated/SC Increases

Irving Paper has announced a $40.00 per ton price increase on Supercalendered paper, including Irving SCB, Irving SCA and Radiance (SCA+), effective with all new and existing orders shipping on or after October 1. The increase applies to all basis weights.

Catalyst Paper Corp. also announced price increases for certain coated mechanical and Supercalendered papers, effective with Oct. 1 shipments.
The following coated mechanical brands will increase by $60 per ton (C$66 per metric tonne): Pacificote, Electracote Brite, and Electracote.
The following SC brands will increase by $40 per ton (C$44 per metric tonne): Electracal (SCA), and Electraprime (SCB).
The change applies to all brightnesses, finishes, and basis weights.

West Fraser Lowers Pulp Price

West Fraser informed North American customers today that its price for northern bleached softwood kraft (NSBK) would decline $20/tonne, effective September 1 until further notice.

UPM Raflatac Completes Acquisition

UPM Raflatac completes the acquisition of Gascogne Laminates Switzerland
UPM Raflatac has completed its acquisition of the labelstock business operations of Gascogne Laminates Switzerland of the Gascogne Group. The acquisition was announced on 1 June 2012. Gascogne Laminates Switzerland employs approximately 110 people in its operations in Martigny, Switzerland.

AF&PA Files Brief with Supreme Court

AF&PA Files Brief with U.S. Supreme Court: The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has joined other petitioners in a brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse a Ninth Circuit decision (NEDC v. Brown) finding that logging roads are “point sources” requiring Clean Water Act industrial discharge permits.

Hearst Names "Cosmopolitan" Editor


Ms. Coles has been editor-in-chief at Hearst's Marie Claire since 2006. Her new job atop the much larger Cosmopolitan begins Sept. 10. Ms. White will become an advisor at Hearst, the company said.
Cosmo is the top newsstand magazine in the country, but has been increasingly relying on cheap subscription offers to maintain its large reach among consumers as the industry suffers persistent, large declines in single-copy sales.

USA Launches "Prime" Magazine


This weekend, high school football fans in 11 markets across the country will have the chance to see their favorite local stars highlighted in Prime, the debut magazine from USA Today Sports. The color insert, of which 550,000 copies will be distributed in-school or with Gannett newspapers in select cities from Washington, D.C., to Phoenix, covers both national rankings and local players.

Time to Pick Larsen?


Time Inc. is expected to name Todd Larsen, the former president of Dow Jones, to a new position overseeing its news and sports titles, Adweek has learned. New CEO Laura Lang has taken her time making her mark since coming on board at the start of the year, but is expected to start rolling out changes post-Labor Day, and Larsen’s appointment could be one of the first.
Larsen left Dow Jones in June after being passed over for the CEO job, which went to Lex Fenwick. Lang has already hired two other News Corp. vets, HR exec Greg Giangrande and spokeswoman Teri Everett. 

Apple Settles eBook Case


Consumers in 49 states (all except Minnesota) and five territories will be reimbursed at least 25 cents for every ebook purchase they made from large publishers between April 1, 2010 and May 21, 2012.
The news comes from court filings that offer fresh details about a sweeping settlement between state governments and three publishers over an alleged conspiracy with Apple to fix the price of e-books.

New California Tax Law Effective 9/15


Beginning September 15, 2012, a new law takes effect that expands the types of out-of-state retailers required to register with the California State Board of Equalization (BOE) and requires them to begin collecting  and remitting use tax on sales of tangible personal property to California consumers. The law applies to out-of-state retailers that have substantial nexus with California consumers. This includes any out-of-state retailer that has sold more than $1 million to California consumers in the  past year and has had more than $10,000 in sales referred by an affiliate operating in California.

Commercial Printing Shipments Reported

July 2012 US Commercial Printing Shipments Flat with 2011 (Economics & Research Center):
The US commercial printing shipments for July 2012 were $6.26 billion, essentially even with 2011. They were down slightly, -$15 million in current dollars, or -0.2%. On an inflation-adjusted basis, shipments were down -$104 million (-1.6%).
