Harbor Paper to Restart in April

Harbor Paper said it will restart its uncoated freesheet paper mill in Hoquiam, WA, the week of April 15.
The mill was reported to be idled in February during a management change.
The company said it entered into a partnership with AT Clayton, a Marubeni company, that includes pulp supply from the Marubeni Peace River mill in Alberta
The Hoquiam mill is shown with capacity of roughly 125,000 to 150,000 tons/yr on two machines.
The mill had reopened in September 2012 after closing in May 2011.

Marubeni, Nippon JV: AMCEL of Brazil

Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. (President: Yoshio Haga) today converted AMCEL of Brazil (refer to Note 1), a joint venture company with Marubeni Corporation (President and CEO: Teruo Asada) for tree-planting, timber production and export operations, into its wholly owned subsidiary. At the same time, Nippon Paper Industries transferred all the shares it had held in WAPRES (refer to Note 2), a joint venture with Marubeni in Australia, to Marubeni.

Port Hawkesbury Claims Full WTO Compliance

Pacific West Commercial Corporation is responding to an inquiry by the U.S. Trade Representative, to determine whether the investments into the Port Hawkesbury Paper Mill in Nova Scotia may be in contravention of the World Trade Organization's rules.
"The claims we are hearing, specifically from members of congress from Maine, regarding our investment into Port Hawkesbury Paper are completely false.   Pacific West received sound legal advice from specialized trade counsel on this transaction, and our investment is fully consistent with international trade rules" said Shawn Lewis, VP and General Counsel of Pacific West Commercial Corporation.

Rumford Settlement Motivated by NewPage Bankruptcy

Rumford Paper Co. may have settled with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission largely because its parent company, NewPage Corp., is in the middle of bankruptcy proceedings, according to a mill spokesman and a consultant. 
FERC had accused Rumford Paper of fraudulently manipulating an energy program in 2007-08 that paid industrial electricity users to reduce energy consumption at times of high demand. It claimed the company received nearly $3 million in ill-gotten profits.

Gov. Optimistic Sold Wausau Mills Will Restart

Governor Scott Walker says he's "cautiously optimistic" about the prospects about the paper operations in Rhinelander and Mosinee.
Wausau Paper announced last week the potential sale of both plants to a New York based private equity firm KPS Capital Partners.

Norske Skog Shifts PM to Coated Paper

Norske Skogindustrier ASA, the Norwegian papermaker that hasn’t made a profit in eight years, is betting on an expansion in coated paper used for catalogues and inserts to counter a slump in newsprint and magazine demand. 
The company is converting one of its paper machines at the Boyer mill in Australia to coated paper and is also investing to expand the product range at its Saugbrugs mill in Norway in a move that could see coated paper account for as much as 25 percent of sales in the future, Norske Skog Chief Executive Officer Sven Ombudstvedt said in a phone interview on March 22.

Stracel LWC PM Converting to Packaging

Metso will supply Blue Paper with a grade conversion rebuild of their paper machine at their mill site in Strasbourg, France. The target is to produce packaging materials on a paper machine that previously produced LWC, light weight coated paper, a grade that is suffering from a decline in demand. The start-up of the rebuilt machine is scheduled for the last quarter of 2013. The value of the order will not be disclosed.

Tom Davis, most recently VP-sales and marketing for Forbes Media, has been named CMO. He succeeds Jack Laschever, who has been appointed president of Forbes Conferences.
Davis, who joined Forbes Media in 2008, previously held multiple roles at IDG, including general manager of IDG's Customer Access Group and associate publisher of Network World.
Laschever had served as CMO since September 2011.

MPA Swipe 2.0 Discussion: Hearst & Others

Yesterday, at the MPA-Association of Magazine Media's Swipe 2.0 conference in New York, speakers from across the publishing and tech industries gathered to show off their latest tablet products and new ways of replacing dwindling print revenue with digital innovation.
John Loughlin, evp and general manager of Hearst Magazines, took the stage to give an overview of the publisher's current tablet strategy. Loughlin declared himself "hugely bullish" on e-editions, saying that they "offer a chance to fundamentally strengthen traditional magazines."... 
The new New York magazine iPad app, which was presented at the conference, includes regularly updated content from NYmag.com's popular blogs. Forbes similarly integrated a live Web stream into its latest magazine app, which launched in January.

Advance Publications Sells Sporting News

The Sporting News used to be one of America’s oldest print publications, but last year it moved to a digital-only format. And now it’s owned by a British Web video company.
Sporting News owner Advance Publications — the same folks that own Conde Nast — has folded the title into a joint venture with Perform, a London-based digital video distributor. The idea is to create a bigger U.S. presence for Perform, which already distributes sports highlights clips to some U.S. newspapers and other publications.

E-tailers 44% of Book Purchase Volume

The rise in e-book reading in the U.S. and U.K. over the last three years has been a key driver in the market share gains of e-retailers, according to research being released this month by Bowker Market Research. In the U.S., e-retailers accounted for 44 percent of book purchases by volume in 2012, up from 25 percent in 2010. In the U.K. the rise has been somewhat less dramatic but still significant, up from 25 percent in January-November 2010, to 38 percent in the same period in 2012.

NY High Court Upholds Online Retail Tax

Amazon.com Inc and other out-of-state online retailers must collect state tax on New York state customers, the state's highest court ruled on Thursday, a decision at odds with other courts that could set the stage for a showdown in the U.S. Supreme Court.
The case, combining two brought by Amazon and Overstock.com Inc, was decided by the New York State Court of Appeals by a vote of 4-1.

New York Magazine Among National Award Finalists

ASME Announces 2013 National Magazine Award Finalists:  Many of the usual suspects have topped the list as finalists. There are 62 publications nominated in 23 categories this year, with 26 magazines receiving multiple nominations. National Geographic leads the pack with seven nominations; Condé Nast’s Bon Appétit has nabbed six, as did New York magazine. GQ and The New Yorker each received five nominations, and Esquire, Harper’s Magazine, Mother Jones and Texas Monthly all received four nods each.

Quad/Graphics to Add Jobs in Oklahoma City

Quad/Graphics to Add 130 Jobs in Oklahoma City: Quad/Graphics is expanding its sprawling Oklahoma City printing facility and adding to its workforce. The Wisconsin-based company is adding a 93,800-square-foot storage area to its building at 6801 S Sunnylane Road at an estimated cost of $7 million. The company also is installing a press for magazine and catalog work.

Diversified Communications CEO Retiring

Hasselback Steps Down as President, CEO of Diversified Communications:  Nancy Hasselback started out as a commercial fisherman, owning and operating fishing vessels in Rhode Island and Alaska. Over the last 33 years, though, she has worked her way up the ranks of Diversified Communications, ultimately nabbing the company’s top spot as president and CEO—a job she will leave for retirement come June 28th, the company announced Monday morning. The company’s vice president of business development, Ted Wirth, will step into Hasselback’s role to become president and CEO of the Maine-based media company, which serves the seafood, food service, natural and organic, healthcare, commercial marine and business management industries through face-to-face events, publications and the Web.
