Sale Puts Boise’s International Falls Mill at Risk

http://www.startribune.com/business/223964661.html
Packaging Corp. of America’s announcement Monday that it plans to buy struggling Boise Inc. in a cash deal worth nearly $2 billion has raised concerns about the fate of Boise’s paper plant in International Falls.
Illinois-based PCA is best known for making boxboard and corrugated packaging products, while the smaller Boise makes copier paper, liner board and corrugated packaging products. But copier paper is the primary product for Boise’s International Falls plant, putting it at increased risk for cutbacks. In May, the factory announced that it was reducing staff as electronic correspondence such as e-mail and text messages clipped demand for paper.
“The question is whether Packaging Corporation of America wants the copy-paper portion of [Boise’s] business,” said Wayne Gjerde, recycling market development manager for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. “I am really concerned that we maintain our container board and paper capacity here. That [provides] a lot of our jobs.”

Holmen Closes Newsprint PM

http://www.holmen.com/
Holmen has permanently stopped production on the 200,000 tonne/yr newsprint machine PM 51 at its Braviken mill in central Sweden. The machine was halted on September 14, at around 2 PM.
Holmen announced plans to close the machine in March this year due to falling demand, pressure on prices, high raw material costs and the strengthening of the Swedish krona. The company settled the timing for the closure, which has led to 168 job cuts, in May. It is not yet clear what will happen to PM 51, a spokesperson for Holmen said.

Rainy Summer Costly to Mill

http://www.memphisdailynews.com/news/2013/sep/16/international-paper-keeps-eye-on-rainy-summer/
The president and CEO of Memphis-based International Paper Co. has been watching the weather a lot lately.
John Faraci, in a session with analysts and investors at a UBS gathering last week, said the wettest summer since 1895 is causing the global paper company some headwinds for the third quarter.
“We’re on track in the Southeast … of having the wettest year since 1895. … That really started to happen at the end of May,” Faraci said at the Thursday, Sept. 12, event. “What that’s meant is our wood costs, particularly hardwood – they are going to rise a lot more significantly than we thought.”
It means IP will probably end up spending about $20 million to $30 million more than it anticipated. But Faraci emphasized the problem shouldn’t have lasting effects on the company.

Q: "Our catalogs tend to be crammed with photos and descriptions. How do I demonstrate to upper management the value of design elements, white space and larger photos per spread?" — Angela Sanchez, creative director, NLC ProductsDescription: pens in a new window
A: to speak to one or both of those interests. Try this two-step approach:
Most C-level execs are primarily interested in increasing sales and decreasing costs. Therefore, whatever you present to them needs
1. Mock up a couple of catalog spreads done the way you think they should look.
2. Ask to test your revised layout to see if it beats the old layout.
