Magazines, newspapers and marketing businesses that depend on the U.S. mail suffered a setback in the fight to ward off an exigent rate hike on top of the annual rate that's tied to the consumer price index.

Citing its "precarious financial condition," the Postal Board of Governors proposed a rate increase of 5.9 percent on top of the annual CPI increase of 1.6 percent. If approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission, the rates would go into effect Jan. 26, 2014.

Some subscribers of four Hearst magazines will soon get perfume samples in an apparently new fashion for the industry: via sample vials of Marc Jacobs Daisy and Eau So Fresh.
The two-and-a-half milliliter tubes will come poly-bagged to 100,000 copies of the November issues of Elle, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire and Seventeen, for a total of 400,000 subscribers, according to Hearst Magazines. Affixing sample-size bottles of perfume to magazines is believed to be a first. "The technology just didn't exist," said Michael Clinton, president-marketing and publishing director of Hearst Magazines.
For magazine publishers, it could serve as yet another way to attract dollars from beauty advertisers, which has been among a handful of persistent bright spots for the industry.

Also stresses the strength and power of print magazine design and packaging, and says that print is necessary for brand expansion. “We still and always will, I think, create things for print Esquire that [aren't] created for purely digital media.”
