Cascades Converting Former Boise PM

http://www.paperage.com/2013news/09_19_2013cascades_st_helens_tissue_machine.html
Cascades has announced plans to install a second paper machine at its tissue mill in St. Helens, Oregon.
The project will be realized through the acquisition of the specialty paper machine previously operated by Boise Inc., which is located adjacent to Cascades' existing tissue machine. This machine will be reconfigured to produce 55,000 tons of tissue paper annually, bringing the total tissue paper capacity of the St. Helens' site to 120,000 tons per year, Cascades said.
The total cost of the project is estimated to be $35 million.

UPM, Stora Enso Mega-Merger Speculation

http://www.printweek.com/news/1212615/UPM-Stora-Enso-mega-merger-mooted/

According to a report in Swedish business title Affärs Välden (Business World) the two companies would combine the majority of their European papermaking operations, with UPM becoming the majority shareholder in the new venture with a 65% stake.
The mooted move would create the world’s biggest paper company. It has been speculated about for some time.
A Reuters report last year stated: "A merger would improve profitability by combining production facilities while at the same time allowing them to take advantage of growth areas and businesses that are not overlapping, such as in packaging and label products."
A merged business would control around 40% of European paper capacity, said Handelsbanken. Any deal would be subject to approval by the European competition authorities.
A paper industry expert told PrintWeek: "I think it would make complete sense culturally. If UPM is going to take over anyone then Stora Enso is the most compatible. And Stora Enso have made it clear they don’t want to remain in paper making."
UPM and Stora Enso declined to comment on market rumours.

Riding The Wave Of Killer Catalog Design

http://printmediacentr.com/2013/09/riding-the-wave-of-killer-catalog-design/

My catalog love affair never faded, but now I that I work in the printing industry, I see these campaigns from a professional advertising perspective. I still scope out the inventory, only I also consider the overall layout along with other design considerations. Today I want to share what I think is an excellent example of a catalog design from Swell.com, an ecommerce site for surf/skate apparel and accessories. I discovered the site while searching for board shorts for my very picky husband, and that’s how I ended up on their mailing list.  I’ve made a few purchases in the last couple of years, so I’m an example of a repeat customer taking the catalog bait to make a purchase online. I leave their catalogs on my coffee table for guests to enjoy, another big bonus for their brand. My friends leaf through them all the time, and most have never heard of Swell before. I doubt any of my friends have made a purchase, but at least they’re aware of the brand’s existence.
