Retail
sales ticked up in the month of January as consumers adjusted their spending in
response to the increase in payroll taxes and rise in gasoline and energy
prices. According to the National Retail Federation, the world’s largest retail
trade association, January retail sales (excluding automobiles, gas stations
and restaurants) increased 0.3 percent seasonally adjusted from December and
increased 5.4 percent unadjusted year-over-year.
