As reported by the Pulp and Paper Products Council, North American coated mechanical paper shipments for November fell -6.3% as compared to the same month of last year. Demand was down -8.3% and imports declined -17.7%.
Year-to-date, shipments decreased -7.3%, demand fell -8.2% and imports were down -12.2% as compared to the same period in 2010. The operating rate was 89% for November and 89% Y-t-D. Coated woodfree (freesheet) paper shipments for November decreased -2.6%, demand fell -2.1% and imports rose +1.4%. Year-to-date, shipments declined -4.5%, demand was down -2.5% and imports increased +5.7%. The operating rate 90% for the month and 94% Y-t-D.

Demand declined -13.5% for the month (SC-A/SC-A+, -16.1%) and -2.1% Y-t-D (SC-A/SC-A+, -6.6%. Offshore imports were down -14.5% for the month (SC-A/SC-A+, -13%), but they rose +5.3% Y-t-D (SC-A/SC-A+, +2.5%).
Separately, the AF&PA reported that U.S. Printing and Writing shipments fell -4% in November, as did purchases.
