Lots of Smaller Deals Are Driving Media M&A Activity:
Media, information and marketing acquisition volume and value continue to grow according to a third-quarter M&A report released by media bankers The Jordan, Edmiston Group. Year-to-date deal volume pace has been driven primarily by smaller, sub-$50 million transactions, however, with strategic buyers accounting for the vast majority.
The report says deal volume is up 49 percent for the first three quarters over the same period last year to 946—91 percent of the deals were below $50 million.

Hearst Design Group Consolidates Editorial Side

Hearst Magazines' Design Group, comprised of House Beautiful, Veranda and Elle Decor, is combining several editorial departments and is expected to eliminate some positions in the process.
Newell Turner, currently House Beautiful editor in chief, will become editor in chief of the group, a newly created position. Each title will have its own eic—Michael Boodro and Dara Caponigro will remain at Elle Decor and Veranda, respectively, while House Beautiful—the largest of the three with a circulation of 835,005—will get a new editor), as well as design director, interiors editor and senior writer. All three magazines—which already share a publishing department—will share market, features, and photography departments, though.

More Titles Launched First 9 Months 2012

Publishers launched 155 magazines in the first three quarters of 2012, among them Fairchild Publications' men's fashion quarterly M and northeast Mississippi's new lifestyle title Mud & Magnolias.
An even more promising statistic for the period: Only 55 magazines folded, compared to a loss of 119 titles a year ago.

WSJ Launches "Mansion"

The Wall Street Journal on Friday will debut a weekly section covering the global luxury real estate market.
“Mansion” will run as a standalone section in the Journal every Friday in the U.S., with select content appearing each week in the Journal's Europe and Asia editions. Relevant content will also run in WSJ.com's Chinese-, German- and Japanese-language editions. All “Mansion” content will be available via the Journal's universal app for iPhone and iPad.

Canadian Print Magazine Readership Up

Canadians read more print magazines this year than last, according to the Print Measurement Bureau’s (PMB) Fall 2012 study.
Print magazines in Canada had an average readership of 1.02 million Canadians in 2012, a slight rise from 1 million in 2011.

Time Inc. Introduces Amplify

The product, which Time Inc. is calling Amplify, is one of the company's first tangible moves to boost digital revenue since CEO Laura Lang joined in January from the digital agency Digitas.

PRC Questions USPS Plan

The Postal Service's regulator on Friday questioned the potential savings from a plan to shut mail processing sites and slow mail delivery, saying the mail agency could save about the same amount without making major changes to delivery times.
The Postal Service plans to close nearly half its mail processing sites over the next few years, part of its response to tumbling mail volumes as Americans use email more.
But postal officials' assumption that the best response to lower volume was to slow delivery caused it to overlook other cost-cutting options, the Postal Regulatory Commission said in a non-binding opinion.

Port Hawkesbury Paper Restarts

The $33-million sale of the Port Hawkesbury paper mill is complete, and the first paper is expected to roll off the line in the first few days of October. One year after the former NewPage facility in Nova Scotia shut down, the sale to Pacific West Commercial Corp. was completed on Sept. 28. Two hundred and fifty employees returned to work within days.
The mill is restarting under the name Port Hawkesbury Paper.

More Join Pulp Price Increase

Alberta-Pacific (Alpac) has also announced that its northern bleached hardwood kraft (NBHK) and northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp prices will increase in North America and Asia, effective October 1 until further notice.

Magazine Industry Employment Falls

While the decline hasn’t been quite as steep as in the newspaper industry, magazine publishers have shed a substantial number of jobs over the last decade, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, which provides quarterly estimates of the number of people employed by periodical publishers, among other industries.
According to the BLS, the total size of the magazine industry workforce shrank from 156,212 in March 2002 to 111,126 in March 2012, the most recent month for which data are available -- a 29% drop over 10 years.

U.S. media revenue for the 100 Leading Media Companies rose 4.0% in 2011, fueled by surging growth in digital. That represents a record $340 billion in net U.S. media revenue. However, last year's percentage gain marked the lowest growth rate in a nonrecession year since Ad Age began this ranking in 1981. Digital revenue -- mostly at digital pure plays such as Google and Facebook -- jumped 19.7%. Remove digital from the equation, and Media 100 revenue rose only 2.8% in 2011. The number of media deals rose almost 49% during the first three quarters compared with the same period in 2011, while total value increased 52%, according to a report by media investment bank Jordan, Edmiston Group.
The 946 transactions during the first three quarters of this year had a combined value of $49.4 billion, compared with 635 deals valued at $32.5 billion during the first three quarters of 2011.

ZenithOptimedia lowered its global ad spending forecast to 3.8% growth this year, down from a June forecast of 4.3% growth, citing uncertainty in the eurozone.
Next year, global ad spending will grow by 4.6%, according to the report. In North America, ad spending will be up 3.6% next year, ZenithOptimedia projected.

Pacific West/Port Hawk.: Down to a Few Signatures

Sale to Pacific West Commercial Corp. now just needs a few signatures:
The sale agreement between Pacific West Commercial Corp. and NewPage Port Hawkesbury was approved by the court today.
Pacific West Commercial Corp. also received approval of its amended power rate applications by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board today.
The only thing remaining to wrap up the sale is the signatures.
The purchase is expected to be completed tomorrow and most of the employees required to run the super calendared paper machine will be back on the job on Sunday.

Congressman Asks US Gov. to Review Port Hawk Deal

Catalyst Closes Snowflake Mill

The economically struggling region of Navajo County around Snowflake will see its jobless rate spike Monday when Catalyst Paper Corp. closes its paper mill and puts 308 well-paid employees out of work.
The company announced the closure in July amid bankruptcy proceedings for Richmond, British Columbia-based Catalyst, which has three larger paper mills in Canada.

Chinese Pulp Business Not Sustainable

China will continue to see rising wood pulp production along with rising imports of wood chips to make that pulp,  according to 2012 The China Pulp Market: A Comprehensive Analysis and Outlook, a new study release today by RISI the leading information provider for the global forest products industry. The study also concludes that large-scale papergrade market pulp production in China is not a sustainable business over time.

National Geographic App Downloads Pass 4.5 Million:  
Natural science, exploration and adventure publication National Geographic is seeing traction in the digital space, at least according to its new Consolidated Media Report (CMR) from the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC).
The National Geographic English-language magazine app has reached 4.5 million downloads as of August 31, 2012, while the English-language version of the National Geographic Traveler magazine app has been downloaded by more than 740,000 since the same period.

Investcorp To Sell SourceMedia

Investcorp To Sell SourceMedia: Investcorp has put New York-based publisher SourceMedia up for sale, according to multiple sources.
SourceMedia, which provides news, analysis and research in the b-to-b space through publications including American Banker and The Bond Buyer, has an EBITDA of around $12 million.

Magazine Revenues Helped by Digital

Magazines’ digital advertising is paying off, according to an eMarketer report, which says they will lift overall magazine revenues in coming years, despite decreases on the print side. Magazines may finally be “over the hump” in their transition from print to digital publishing.

Newspaper Ads Down in 2012

All the trend lines for newspaper advertising are pointing down, and the latest forecast from eMarketer does nothing to dispel this gloomy picture.
According to the research firm’s most recent report, total ad revenues for newspapers will decline from $22.5 billion in 2012 to $21.5 billion in 2013, $21 billion in 2014, $20.63 billion in 2015, and $20.4 billion in 2016, for a 9.5% drop over the next four years.

Global advertising spend picked up still sluggish single-digit growth in the second quarter, with Europe remaining the only region going lower.
Worldwide advertising spending was up 2.4% to $139 billion in the second quarter 2012, according to Nielsen's Global AdView Pulse.
North America ad spending also followed global trends -- up 2.4%, with Canada sinking 2%.

Consumers Still Rely on Coupons

Parents Seeking Offers, Coupons Turn to Print and Digital: A Harris poll finds parents are more likely than consumers without children to have stepped up money saving activities, with traditional channels showing a slight lead as the place to go for offers. The poll, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of location-based marketer Placecast, finds parents relying on print and online to save money. Clipping coupons from newspaper inserts (31%) and relying on coupons arriving at the home (31%) are top sources for parents.

Congress Holds Hearings on On-Line Tax

Online tax debate grows as retailers and states weigh in on the clash: On July 24 the House Judiciary Committee convened for a hearing on the Marketplace Equity Act, one of three bills empowering states to compel online merchants to collect sales tax. The bills were designed to close what supporters claim is a loophole from the 1992 Supreme Court decision Quill Corp. v. North Dakota, wherein only merchants with physical presence in a state must collect sales tax.

USPS Defaults on Prefunded Payment
