Port Townsend Paper Names President

Port Townsend Paper Corp.'s board of directors has elected Roger P. Hagan as the company's new president, effective May 1.
Dale Stahl, executive chair of Port Townsend Holdings Co., made the announcement on April 8.
Hagan holds a bachelor’s degree in pulp and paper technology from the University of Washington and a master’s degree from the Institute of Paper Science and Technology.
Hagan replaces Roger Loney, who announced his resignation on March 26. Loney served as President since 2008.

Domtar Closes on Sale of Port Edwards

Domtar on March 27 closed the sale of certain of its Port Edwards mill assets in Wisconsin to DMI Acquisitions, LLC of Columbus, Ohio.
The sale includes all the remaining assets on the site, but does not include the adjacent hydroelectric facilities on the Wisconsin River that Domtar will continue to own and operate to provide power to its Nekoosa, Wisconsin mill.  
Domtar closed the Port Edwards mill in mid-2008. At that time, the mill had the capacity to produce 165,000 tons per year of uncoated freesheet paper and employed about 500 people.

American Forest & Paper Association President and CEO Donna Harman issued the following statement regarding the United States Postal Service's (USPS) decision to postpone elimination of Saturday delivery.
"We are pleased with today's announcement that the USPS will delay its plans to eliminate Saturday mail delivery pending further congressional action, as this reduction in service would have been short-sighted and harmful to their ability to serve customers.

Fate of Sartell Mill

The mill likely will be demolished eventually, Perske said. The company that bought the mill from Verso, AIM Development, will be scrapping much of the metal from the building, and the equipment inside will be sold or auctioned.
Eventually the rest of the structures likely will be demolished and the site redeveloped, he said, although nothing definite has been decided, and options are still being considered.

UPM Sells Aureskoski Real Estate, Machinery

UPM sells the real estate and machinery at Aureskoski further processing mill in Parkano, Finland, to Tammiwood Ltd. The parties have agreed not to disclose the sales price. UPM operations at Aureskoski mill ceased in December 2012. UPM produced interior wood panels at the mill.

New York & Dwell Ready City Modern

New York and Dwell magazines are prepping their second City Modern festival, an unusual cross-title collaboration consisting of a week of events and home tours for consumers and trade professionals.
The inaugural City Modern included a jointly produced onsert that was polybagged with 150,000 copies across both magazines. This year's publication, however, will appear as a 24-page insert that will be distributed to 700,000 subscribers. The insert will appear in the October Dwell (on newsstands Sept. 10) and New York's Fall Preview double issue (on stands Aug. 26).

ASME Announces Magazine of Year Finalists

Following last week's nominations for the 2013 National Magazine Awards, the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) has announced the finalists for the year’s top prize, Magazine of the Year, which honors "editorial excellence in all Magazine Media, including print, online, tablets and smartphones." ASME didn't take any risks with this year’s nominees, three of which—Glamour, National Geographic and Time—were past winners. Also nominated were Esquire and New York.

2012 Global, NA Ad Spending Up

Global ad spending increased 3.2% to $557 billion last year, propelled by a robust third quarter, which included the Olympics. The quarter’s 4.3% bump outpaced the 2.5% increase in the final three months, which included the holiday season. Spending in North America was up 4.6%, topping the 2.8% growth for the Asia-Pacific region. The Middle East and Africa saw the highest percentage growth -- 14.6% -- among the six regions. All were up, except for a 4.2% decline in Europe, where the Olympics were held, per Nielsen.

Magazines Enjoy Digital Lift

The popularity of combined print and digital subscriptions, fueled by the rise of tablets and smartphones, is one factor helping to stabilize overall magazine circulation in the second half of 2012, per The Pew Research Center’s recent State of the News Media 2013 report.

F+W in Partnership with Hubert Burda Media

F+W Enters Licensing Partnership with Hubert Burda Media:  Craft and enthusiast media and e-commerce company F+W Media has struck a licensing partnership with Germany-based Hubert Burda Media. The deal sets up F+W as the U.S. and Canadian publishing and sales operation for what will become Burda Style USA—a digital, e-commerce and print platform for DIY fashion and sewing enthusiasts.

AOL Partners with Publishing Group of America

AOL Partners with Publishing Group of America In Video Syndication Deal:  AOL has struck a syndication deal with the Publishing Group of America (PGOA), publisher of Relish, American Profile and Spry, to share video content between AOL On Network and PGOA's branded sites.
In terms of syndicated content deals, this one is on the larger side. The AOL On Network breaks down into 20 channels, and attracts about 35 million monthly uniques. PGOA titles Relish, American Profile and Spry have a combined circ of 34 million and are distributed via 1,400 local newspapers. The company's digital properties bring in 180 million monthly impressions, it says.

Diversified Communication’s president and CEO Nancy Hasselback may have announced last week that she will retire in June, but she’s not exiting the company without adding to its growth: The company announced Thursday that it has acquired two new businesses in the print, e-media, marketing services and exhibition industries.
The assets added to the Diversified family include the Institute of Finance and Management, a resource of information and tools in the corporate financial management, accounts payable, credit, receivables & collections and corporate recruiting and security industries; and the UK-based Intelligent Exhibitions Limited, which includes events focused on ocean technology and light detection and ranging (LiDAR).
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

After 15 years of manufacturing and selling RFID labels that it made by converting radio frequency identification tags produced by other companies, RR Donnelley & Sons Co. is now also providing a line of passive RFID tags—both high-frequency (HF) and ultrahigh-frequency (UHF)—that it designs and manufactures with conventional passive RFID chips and a custom-printed antenna. The company not only will use the printed RFID technology to make custom RFID labels that can be affixed to items, but it can also embed the tags directly into a wide range of products, including catalogs, product packaging and retail displays.
