DMA Plans Washington Campaign

Direct marketers are planning a broad campaign to defend their multibillion-dollar business against attacks by privacy advocates and others in Washington that propose to restrict data mining both online and offline.
The campaign, called the Data-Driven Marketing Institute, was announced today during the Direct Marketing Association's opening keynote address at its annual conference in Las Vegas.

Mary Berner, the former Reader’s Digest Association honcho who’s the new president and CEO of the MPA [1], is wasting no time in trying to show the magazine industry she means business.
“I’m pissed off that we as an industry have allowed others to hijack our narrative,” Berner said, her signature feistiness on full display as she kicked off the MPA’s annual American Magazine Conference in San Francisco on Oct. 15. She exhorted the gathering to “stop apologizing for magazines” and turn the conversation to how they are purveyors of unique content across platforms and powerful arbiters of taste and thought.

Next Issue Media has 70,000 Subscribers

Next Issue Media—an e-reading venture created more than two years ago by a quintet of top U.S. publishers (Condé Nast, Hearst, Time Inc., Meredith, and News Corp.)—is now applying that same “all you can eat” concept to magazine titles.
It’s been just three months since Next Issue finally launched an iPad app (Android launched six months ago) and a month since it doubled the number of available titles from 35 to 72. So far, 70,000 customers have signed up for the service.

A new market test is set to begin on or shortly after Nov. 12, assuming regulators give the green light, to to allow USPS to test the operational feasibility of same-day delivery to multiple locations, and work out a possible pricing structure.

Vertis Files for Chapter 11, Quad/Graphics Bids to Buy

Vertis files for Chapter 11 as Quad/Graphics bids to buy assets:
Vertis, which is expected to generate approximately $1.1bn in revenues and nearly $60m in adjusted EBITDA in 2012, issued a statement last week announcing its plan to file for bankruptcy and sell its assets to Quad/Graphics via a court-supervised auction.
The bankruptcy filing is the third since 2008 for US-based direct marketing giant Vertis, which sold off its UK operations in 2005, and comes just two years after it dumped $700m of debt in its previous Chapter 11 filing.

MarketLive Survey: More Holiday Shopping Online

In 2012, customers will spend about the same amount on holiday gifts as last year—but a greater share of that spending will be online.
Of the more than 1,000 shoppers surveyed, 33% said they will do 'All' or 'Most' of their shopping on the Internet this holiday season. That's a significant jump from last year's 25%.

Gannett Reports Q3 Revenue Growth

For the first time in years, Gannett Co. reported revenue growth in the third quarter, when total revenues reached $1.3 billion, up 3.1% from $1.27 billion in the same period of 2011.
The increase was due mostly to strong growth at its broadcast segment, where revenues increased 36% from $174 million last year to $237 million this year, due mostly to political and Olympics advertising.
