PPPC Reports H1 2012 Numbers

The Pulp & Paper Products Council reported that North American coated mechanical paper demand fell -4.1% in the first half of 2012 as compared to H1 2011, shipments decreased -3.3%, imports were down -7.4% and the operating rate was 91% (for June, the rate was 100%). Coated woodfree demand in H1 declined -7.1%, shipments were down -4.5%, imports fell -12% and the operating rate was 85%. SC-A/A+ demand for the first six months decreased -23.9%, shipments fell -24.3% and imports were down -23.9%. The operating rate for Supercalendered paper was 94%.

AF&PA: P&W Shipments Fall in June, CM Purchases Up

According to the American Forest & Paper Association's June 2012 Printing-Writing Paper Report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 8% in June compared to June 2011. 
Purchases of coated mechanical (CM) papers were up slightly compared to June 2011 - the second consecutive year-over-year increase. CM shipments decreased 3% compared to June 2011. Year-to-date shipments are down 4% compared to first six months of 2011.

FERC Accuses Rumford Paper & Energy Co.


Federal energy regulators are accusing a Maine energy business, one of its principals and a paper mill of a scheme to manipulate the regional energy market.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission says Portland-based Competitive Energy Services LLC and one of its partners, Richard Silkman, violated agency rules by giving fraudulent advice to Rumford Paper Co. that allowed the mill to financially benefit when it was later paid to reduce electricity consumption during times of high demand.

Heidelberg Names New CEO

BookStats: Stores Still Biggest Sales Venue

BookStats 2012 Survey Finds eBooks Lead Adult Fiction Sales: Brick-and-mortar stores remain the biggest sales channel; and direct-to-consumer saw strong growth according to BookStats 2012, the most comprehensive annual survey of the size and scope of the U.S. publishing industry.
BookStats, examining U.S. publishers’ annual net sales revenues and net units, is co-produced by the Assn. of American Publishers and the Book Industry Study Group.
The 2012 edition includes data provided by 1,977 publishers from all four industry sectors.
Despite the negative impact of Borders’ bankruptcy and closures, particularly on print book sales, through three quarters of 2011, the trade market held up equal with 2010 revenue figures, even showing a slight increase.

UPM Producing LWC in Plattling


UPM is now selling matt and glossy lightweight coated (LWC) paper sheets from its Plattling mill in southeastern Germany.
After closing the 320,000 tonne/yr Albbruck coated mechanical paper mill in southwestern Germany at the end of January, UPM began transferring the site's two sheeting lines to the Plattling facility. The construction work for new buildings and the installation of the lines was wrapped up at the end of May and the first saleable paper sheets were produced at the beginning of June, UPM Plattling general manager Wolfgang Ohnesorg told PPI Europe.

2011 Chinese Paper & Board Production Up 13.2%


As reported by the "Research Report on China's Papermaking Industry, 2012", in recent years, China becomes one of the countries with the quickest productivity increase in world’s papermaking industry. Since 2006, the production of China’s machine-made paper and paper boards maintains a steady increase momentum. In 2011, the production reached 110.34 million tons, with an increase of 13.24% YOY. 

China Cracks Down on Wastepaper Contamination


China’s London-based CCIC inspection agency has contacted exporters of material to China to remind them of the need to ensure that mixed paper sent to the country does not have contamination... and is rejecting shipments that do not meet those standards .
The action by CCIC comes after increasing awareness in China of the poorer material as well as tougher customs controls on the imports of overseas products ranging from scrap metal and waste paper... Others see the current crackdown as reflecting the weaker markets for exports with reduced prices and slower demand meaning that Chinese mills can be more choosy.
